    From NeoBuggy...

Since the start of 2012, AE have been working on a couple of things; the first a revised vertical kingpin for front caster blocks. In the past we’ve seen nylon development parts but from the looks of the CNC’d aluminium parts on Maifield’s car they look pretty ready, and should be available later this month.

For the second update we turn our attention to the rear-end, new rear hinge pin plates which lower the hingepins and thus the roll center as well. Back in February at the Nitro Challenge in Arizona we saw the drivers running carbon fibre plates, but at the nats Maifield along with most of the AE team ran the new ‘C’ and ‘D’ low roll center plates from Swedish performance specialists GHEA. Compared with the carbon ones, GHEA’s are beefier and much more solid – you make the car stronger and you reduce the chance of failure.

GHEA options is a running theme on Maifield’s RC8.2 with the full treatment throughout. The shocks are an area which have seen some changes; Ryan uses 8x1.3 pistons from GHEA and we believe that they are fitted with Hot Bodies D8 shock caps. It appears the D8 caps move the shock closer to the tower.

Yet another change is the ackerman or steering plate, the steering links are no longer attached directly to the steering bellcrank as they were on Maifield's Neo12 car, presumably to accommodate the new changed steering knuckles & kingpin.

You’ll notice from the photos that some dremeling of the carbon shock towers both front and rear is necessary in order to accommodate the new shock position. The carbon towers themselves are aftermarkets parts, in this case from SNR Graphite, again modded – adding a lower 7th mounting hole below the standard 6 for the rear upper camber link.

Yet another popular mod amongst the AE team ‘mod squad’ is using the older RC8B rear wing mount coupled with Upgrade RC’s ‘Vortex’ wing – a wing that both Maifield, Cavalieri as well as Champion Tessmann use. The RC8B mount according to sources higher than the RC8.2 mount, thus raising the wing a bit, the result is improved stability.

The news from the nats was that of Maifield’s official switch to Futaba having previously used servos from Savox and Airtronics (Sanwa) radio/receiver, he uses the metal case S9353HV servo both for the steering and throttle duties. On his way to securing TQ, taking 3 of the 4 qualifiers Ryan used the LRP engine fitted with XTEC clutch and fuelled by Sidewinder, he used JConcepts’ range of tyres over the course of the weekend, debuting the new Stacker tyre [SEE VIDEO] during one of the final practice rounds, enough to place him top seed for qualifying.

That looks like a very nice buggy. Hopefully I can expand my collection of AE stuff soon.

The new caster blocks and kingpins are very interesting the rest is not really new.

GHEA stuff is the new "hype", many racers use them.

Nice write up and excellent info. Would all these mods apply to the rc8.2e ass well or would the electric buggy be too different?

The GHEA input cups are the only GHEA parts that I don't really care for. One of the RC8.2 changes I really like and had been waiting for is the CVA boot over the universal joints both front and rear. I always had problems with dirt and grit getting into this area and causing serious drag on the entire driveline. The GHEA input cups preclude the use of the CVA boots. I use GHEA parts as well but I will not be using their input cups.

Just my $0.02...your mileage may vary...

One thing I noticed that I can't really account for is the bolt that is in the rear chassis brace. Look at the rear chassis brace just above the input cup. There's a bolt screwed through the brace for some reason. I can't see the right side very well in the photos so I can't see what that bolt might be doing. I use the aluminum braces but was curious about this. Any ideas why that screw is there?

Hmmm, upon closer inspection, it looks like the plastic rear chassis brace has a carbon fiber reinforcement of some type that is being held on by that bolt.

Hmmm...a brace designed to brace a brace. And you have to dremel off a piece of the brace to get the brace that braces it to fit. Seems like it would be easier to make a better brace to begin with...oh wait...they did. :sneaky:

they actually did it to find a different amount of rear flex is why they actually did it.
