Although not always true, a rule of thumb is:

Hot motor, cool controller, cool batteries = undergeared
Cool motor, hot controller, hot batteries = overgeared
Warm motor, warm controller, warm batteries = happy components

I have a t4.1 with stock esc, stock gearing, and a 6100kv reedy motor. It seems to be overheating and shutting down. It with quit for a couple seconds and take off again. The longer I let it sit, the longer it will run. What is wrong? Everything is running freely. I don't get it.

What's your gearing? Did you check gear mesh? What battery you use?

Are you 100% sure the whole drivetrain spins freely?

How you drive the truck? stop and go, hard on brake or reverse? Running in the grass?

IF you have a XP SC700 esc you have to big of a motor.

    Motor Limit: 2 LiPo: 5500kV. 3 LiPo: 4000kV.

A 6100 will fry that esc.

I have the sc 450 bl. Everything is loose and free. I set my gears like I do my nitros. It hasn't failed me yet.

I use a 7.4 500mah most of the time. 11.1 2300mah when I want to break stuff. No grass, just speed runs for now. I never brake. I like to coast to a stop.

Like tmail61 said above, 6100kv might be too much for your esc. Specially on 3S !

That sucks. The only reason I ordered that motor is because they actually sell those two as a package deal. I assumed it would work. Any esc suggestions?

Specs say 5500 max on 2S. Maybe your ESC will be able to handle the 6100 on 2S if your gearing is correct. At least less overheat

    What's your gearing?

So now I have to figure out the gearing. What would take the load off the motor? Bigger pinion? Smaller spur? Vice versa? I play it around in my head, but I just confuse myself. ( easy to do) lol

Smaller pinion = less speed, more acceleration.... less load

Taller pinion = more speed, less acceleration... more load

Motor can overheat from being under or over geared but usually over gearing makes motor overheat. You have to find the right gearing.

I couldn't get it figured out, so I just put a castle set up in the truck I had it in. I put the 3300kv in my losi with a bigger pinion. Runs great with good top end.
